About a year or so ago, we met Nicky Dee and her fantastic dinosaur books. What we loved about the books was that each one focuses on a chosen dinosaur, without dumbing the information down. And, as a series, the books follow the same format, making them feel at once familiar, whilst still exciting. What we loved about Nicky was her passion for dinosaurs! Nicky’s latest title, The Bone Wars, brings to life the true story of two talented, but very poorly behaved ‘gentleman’ scientists.

So, we were delighted to welcome Nicky to the festival this year. Not only did she bring boundless enthusiasm, she also brought with a wealth of knowledge and artefacts for the audience to handle. Nicky’s event really was a treat for any want-to-be palaeontologists.

The afternoon, with its impending rain forecast, was cheered greatly, as the Really Big Pants Theatre Company arrived in town. Willow and Joe brought energy galore to the Brentwood Theatre, with their fantastic show, Suddenly…!

Their love of stories was evident throughout this fast paced, crazy show, with a wide-boy Mr Wolf, Red, Edwin (the spoilt, but loving wolf) and more…character after character spilled onto the stage. The audience flew on a magic carpet, were transported by a magical bird and one lucky audience member even got to take on the role of Postie. What a magical way to be wrapped up in a story.

“I am so encouraged to read more” Is there finer feedback at a children’s lit fest? (Although we love “really awesome” too) “#ChildrensBooks

Thank you to everyone at @BwdLitFest – had a wonderful time. Still lots to see and do this weekend.

Any one of these events is a fantastic opportunity for children to experience literature in original, engaging and entertaining ways. To organise and curate them into a festival is no mean feat, and I feel very fortunate that we have such an event in our area. Many congratulations to all those involved in the planning; please please please let there be a festival in 2018.

William, myself and three friends had a FANTASTIC time at Really Big Pants Theatre Company’s- Suddenly! Children and adults engaged throughout the show.
